This
is an example of pose to pose animation, in the blocking phase. Pose to
pose is a work flow method which means that you basically choose some
key poses and then you put them in the right timing on the timeline.
After you have done that means that you have the blocking (first phase
of the animation, with no in-betweens, just the main poses).
This
video shows a successful blocking, maybe a more advanced one with more
breakdowns added. The main target is getting the timing right and the
poses to look believable, and this example has all of them. We can see
the arcs, the holds, we can even feel the breathing and the lip sync.
From
the first part we can feel his tension, we see he is worried about
something, also his secondary action is smoking (which it is supposed
to calm him down).
We can see a lot of his character through his
eyes and his gestures, though the holds are helping because we can focus
on his heavy breathing.
